Maija Vitola-Zitmane – a Latvian jewellery artist living and working in Riga, holding Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree from the Latvian Academy of Arts in the Metal Design Department. Maija has been working in the jewellery art field – designing jewellery, participating in local and international jewellery and design competitions. The creative process is her inner need. Without it she cannot imagine her daily life.
Jewellery created by the artist represents subtle handmade and delicately intimate messages. She focuses on the human inner world, where without the highest fundamental values – love, respect and devotion, there is also craving and lust. The inspiration for her work is the course of a human life, the experience gained in it, the fundamental values that layer by layer makes the jewel something valuable. Mainly Maija is working with natural materials such as bone, horn and wood combining them with silver.
She creates sculptural art jewellery that becomes a link between her perception of the world and the viewer. There have always been many symbols in her works – this is the way she expresses her feelings. The choice of material depends on the purpose of the work, but often when Maija is carving a material by hand it feels like the material tells its own story, allowing her to create works that are unique and sculptural representations of the designer’s world.
